MILAN – Interviewed yesterday by several of the most important Italian newspapers, Inter patron Massimo Moratti commented on the football scandal and Inter’s position. In part one, Moratti’s comments in the Corriere dello Sport article titled “Justice or I’ll emigrate”:

What if those guilty aren’t punished. What do you think of a Serie A without Milan and Juventus? Would you be nostalgic?
“No, I certainly wouldn’t feel nostalgic.”

Berlusconi has demanded the Scudetto be given to Milan but one of Milan’s managers has been charged. Your club’s behaviour, on the other hand, has always been exemplary. Would it be outrageous if they gave the Scudetto to Inter?
“They could also give it to Chievo. Chievo, Inter, Roma: if all the teams in front have behaved in such a manner as to not deserve that position in the table then the first clean club will be first. Is it Inter? It could be Inter. Roma? Roma. Chievo? Chievo.”

But what if everyone gets off lightly after the trial?
“In Italy there has been talk of a revolt. When you look at the seriousness of what has happened, I think people would be annoyed if there weren’t the right consequences. I understand clearly what is being said, I think that this time football must set an example, otherwise there’s the risk of no one taking this sport seriously any more.”

Still with Inter, but where? In a league where the rules are no longer accepted? There was a polemic during the winter when respected intellectual Umberto Eco said he would emigrate if a certain political situation continued. And what would you do if everything in football remained more or less as it was before, without real conviction? Would you also go abroad?
“I say that Italy has to reckon with its past. Abroad? Why not? It could be an idea. Continuing your business abroad could be an idea if you see there’s no way to make the rules applied after having accepted and respected them.”

The idea of a Super League has resurfaced (even though Galliani has categorically denied this now). Is it worth continuing in this football or is Eco’s emigration idea more than just a joke?
“I don’t know. It could be a suggestion, or something to start taking into consideration. And not for fun either, because there’s nothing to laugh about here. If football here can’t be honest and if dishonest football is not punished, maybe it is possible to host a big club in a foreign league. I want to study the feasibility.”
